about SCB Kenya

Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) – Kenya Chapter

Society for conservation biology is a nonprofit organization that serves as a premier international membership society that aims to link all conservation professionals, students, and nonprofit organizations with a common agenda of practicing the conservation of biodiversity. Society for Conservation Biology was founded in 1986 by great conservation leaders such as E.O. Wilson, Thomas Lovejoy, and Michael Soule’.

The African section of SCB grew from humble beginnings because of a meeting of thirty-five conservation scientists in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2001 with an aim of deliberating on conservation issues in Africa.

The African chapter has over 500 active members globally. The African section boasts of eight chapters which are: Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, south Africa, Madagascar, and Rwanda.

Conservation biology has previously been known to focus on biodiversity and the ecological services they provide. However, over time conservation biology has taken an interdisciplinary approach to conservation after the realization of human impacts on the environment. It therefore deemed fit for this organization to be founded to involve people from different disciplines of professionalism with similar interests to come together with a common purpose of coming up with conservation strategies and policies that support environmental conservation.

SCB Kenyan chapter is based at the Hirola Conservation Program in Nairobi. The chapter shares the same SCB mission of conserving the earth’s biodiversity by advancing science through research and innovation. The Kenyan chapter aims at bringing together conservation enthusiasts and professionals, students, private sector, and government bodies to achieve its mission. The Kenyan chapter aims at creating awareness through public lecturers, and conservation projects that involves the larger public. All with similar interests are encouraged to join us in achieving greater impacts on conservation.
